What do you do when the check engine light comes on in your car or truck?
Check engine light on-Now what?
There you are, driving down the road, minding your own business and suddenly a yellow light comes on your dash "check engine", maybe "service engine soon" or just a picture of an engine. Now what do you do?
If you look in your owners manual, it may say something like this: "Take vehicle to the dealer" or something similar.
Here is a couple of things to consider first. Did the engine change the way that it is running? If not, you may only have a minor issue. If it did change, call your repair shop and talk to someone about it. They can help you decide what to do. Did you just buy gas? If the gas cap is not installed tightly, it can cause the light to come on in cars built in 1997 or later. If the light came on and did not change the way the engine is running, it could simply be a glitch and may go away after driving the car several times.
If it stays on or blinks, you should call your repair shop and talk with someone. It may require diagnostics to find out why it came on and what is required to repair the problem.
